In the mountains of northeastern Colombia, a municipality called Remedios is recognized for its extraordinary mining legacy. For more than four centuries, gold has shaped its identity, economy, and culture, consolidating it as one of the most historic mining towns in the country. Today, that legacy continues through Napoleon Gold Mine.
Gold mining in Remedios, located in Antioquia, Colombia (a mountainous region known for having the city of Medellín as its capital), dates back more than 460 years, to the early years of the colonial period, when the territory became one of the most productive gold regions in what is now Colombia. Within this historic mining district lies La Veta del Cura, one of the oldest and most important gold veins in the country and the world, over which Napoleon Gold Mine has operated for 12 years.
This long-standing mining tradition is celebrated each year during the Gold Festivals (Fiestas del Oro), cultural events held in mining municipalities such as Remedios and Segovia. In Remedios, the festivities highlight mining, livestock farming, music, parades, and cultural expressions, as a tribute to the generations of miners who have worked these lands.
The identity of Remedios is also reflected in its flag, composed of three colors that tell its history. Yellow represents the immense gold wealth that has historically characterized the region; green symbolizes the forests, the natural environment, and territorial richness; and black recalls a chapter of the local past associated with former oil wells in the area.
In addition, Antioquia is historically the most important gold-producing region in Colombia. According to official statistics from the National Mining Agency, in 2024 Antioquia concentrated almost the entirety of the country’s formal gold production, reaffirming its position as the leading gold-producing department.
For gold concentrates, Antioquia led with 88.8%, while Bolívar contributed 3.2% and Cauca 2.3%. In terms of gold, Antioquia accounted for 97.5% of the national total, followed by Valle del Cauca with 1.2% and Chocó with 0.5%.
Napoleon Gold Mine operates in a unique territory, with mining activity recorded since 1933. Remedios, with a mining tradition dating back to 1560, stands out on the map of the most important gold-bearing regions in the country and the world.
