Remedios, the land of gold: the Colombian town where Napoleon Gold Mine operates

Napoleon Gold Mine operates in one of the most exceptional geological environments on the planet. With more than 12 years of experience in a mining region with over 460 years of history, the company has consolidated its operations in Colombia on a world-class geological structure in the municipality of Remedios, in the department of Antioquia.

This structure is the Antioquia Batholith, an enormous mass of intrusive igneous (volcanic) rock formed millions of years ago, when intense magmatic processes developed deep beneath this mountainous region of Colombia. Over time, this magmatic body cooled and solidified, giving rise to a stable geological structure that has been widely documented and recognized as one of the most important in the country.

During its formation, the batholith generated an exceptional hydrothermal environment, characterized by high temperatures, pressure, and the circulation of mineral-rich fluids. Its origin is linked to the subduction of the ancient Farallón tectonic plate beneath the South American plate.

These processes fractured and altered the surrounding host rocks, creating ideal conditions for the formation and concentration of gold and other precious metals.

Thanks to this geological phenomenon, the region encompassing the municipalities of Segovia and Remedios hosts one of the richest, most continuous, and highest-grade gold vein systems in the world, placing it among the few gold districts of this type on the planet. It is an exceptional mining district, comparable to some of the most renowned gold belts globally, within the same territory with continuous mining activity since 1933, where Napoleon Gold Mine currently conducts its operations.

To put its magnitude into perspective, it is worth noting that the Piedra del Peñol, one of Colombia’s most iconic natural landmarks, is merely a visible fragment of this gigantic rocky body, whose total surface area is seven times larger than that of the Aburrá Valley Metropolitan Area (10 municipalities), where the city of Medellín is located.

Napoleon Gold Mine is strategically located within the Antioquia Batholith, operating over La Veta del Cura, one of the oldest and most important gold veins in the country and the world, which extends beneath the urban center of Remedios and below one of the oldest churches in Colombia, founded in 1560, placing the company in a strategic position on the global map of the most relevant gold-bearing regions internationally.
